Fiery Trials

12 Beloved, think it not strange concerning the fiery trial which is to try you, as though some strange thing happened unto you:
13 But rejoice, inasmuch as ye are partakers of Christ's sufferings; that, when his glory shall be revealed, ye may be glad also with exceeding joy.
1 Peter 4:12-13
We must be careful, as Christians, to understand that fiery trials are a normal part of the Christian life! In verse 12 Peter says, Think it not strange concerning the fiery trial which is to try you, as though some strange thing happened unto you. If that is true, what do people mean when they talk about Christians living the abundant life? Even though trials come, our faith in Christ grows deeper through them giving us greater peace and joy.
It doesn't matter if these trials come at the hands of others, are due to health difficulties, or are due to grieving the loss of someone close. God uses all of the trials we face in this life to draw us closer to Him, and to make us a living testimony to those around us.
I just talked recently with a dear Christian friend who has undergone great health difficulties, coming even to the point of death. Now that she is doing much better she looks back over that time, thanking God. Why? Because she has been drawn closer to the Lord that she has ever been; she has a peace and joy greater than she had ever known before.
Many times God takes us through these trials to literally pull our affections away from this life and draw us close to Him. With that closeness we have such great joy and peace that we indeed do realize what an abundant life we have in Christ. We have eternal riches far above any comfort, wealth, or power we could ever have in this life.
What is the right response to the fiery trials God allows to come into our lives? Rejoice, because God has allowed you to suffer even as Christ suffered. When Christ comes again, our joy will be made complete. No matter what trials we face in this life, they will be as nothing compared to the joys which await us in Heaven.
If these fiery trials bring us to Christ and draw us closer to Him, aren't you glad for them? It is better to enter Heaven maimed that to spend eternity in Hell!
Pray that God will give you peace and joy as you walk through the fiery trials that come your way. |
