Imperishable Beauty

(1 Peter 3:1-6) 1 Likewise, wives, be subject to your own husbands, so that even if some do not obey the word, they may be won without a word by the conduct of their wives, 2 when they see your respectful and pure conduct. 3 Do not let your adorning be external ”the braiding of hair and the putting on of gold jewelry, or the clothing you wear” 4 but let your adorning be the hidden person of the heart with the imperishable beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which in God's sight is very precious. 5 For this is how the holy women who hoped in God used to adorn themselves, by submitting to their own husbands, 6 as Sarah obeyed Abraham, calling him lord. And you are her children, if you do good and do not fear anything that is frightening.
What is imperishable beauty? How do we get imperishable beauty?
Beauty is an important subject among women today; the world welcomes the young and beautiful! But, by the time we reach the age of 30, we realize that youth is quickly passing us by. The only thing left then is beauty.
How does the Christian respond to this quest for beauty? Is it wrong to be beautiful? There is nothing wrong with outward beauty; there is also nothing wrong with taking care of ourselves and looking the best that we can. However, this outward beauty is perishable; we cannot carry it to heaven with us.
Imperishable beauty is the hidden, inner beauty of the heart; as Christians we all need to work, by the grace of God, for that imperishable, inner, beauty. Look at the characteristics of imperishable beauty listed in the 1 Peter 3:1-6: respectful and pure conduct, gentle and quiet spirit, and submission to husbands. Look at God's response in verse 5 to this inner beauty: Which in God's sight is very precious.
None of these characteristics is possible by our own efforts; we must continually cry out to God for help. How many women do you know today whose conduct is respectful and pure, or gentle and quiet? What about submitting to our husbands? That is a hotly debatable subject in our culture today. What does it mean to be submissive to our husbands? What if we don't have a husband? Is submission an option for the Christian man or woman?
Pray that God will work in your heart and give you imperishable beauty, especially respectful and pure conduct as well as a gentle and quiet spirit. |
